Debated on posting this BUT in honor of World Thea

Debated on posting this BUT in honor of World Theatre Day thought I would. I’ve had it since Angie Dee and I talked and decided to do Little Mermaid this summer. I’m not auditioning for this one but get to help in a lot of other ways that I’m SO excited for. Busy summer ahead with my boys means that my “roles” look different as far as theatre goes in some seasons.

BUT Angie and Sandy Elliott scooped me up and loved on me following my surgery with Banks. I’d just come off a ventilator and auditioned for “Grease” like an actual insane person and got a callback for Sandy. All I wanted to do when I could talk again was sing again and prove that I could and idk how that happened with my abdominal muscles cut down the middle. I got connected with an insanely patient and loving voice teacher who helped me rehab in my craft (Jennifer) and though I mostly do very high soprano stuff, sometimes I still belt 😅

Art heals. Theatre heals. So proud to be a part of Audience of One. So grateful that theatre exists.

Auditions are this weekend and I am HYPE for all of the performers that are auditioning because they are going to shine. Also if this is the marketing girl at her dining room table sitting down can you imagine the talent the actual cast is going to have???? Make plans now to come see us!! 🧜‍♀️

Wade looked at me this morning and said “Mom, are you doing your best?”. It was as I was frazzled and running around getting lunchboxes packed and noses wiped. I say that a lot when I’m stressed-“I’m doing my best!” As if someone is screaming at me that I’m not.

My mother-in-law has stage 4 cancer. Every day feels like a gift and every doctors appointment feels like a sentencing hearing. I just started working again-which I love-but also I’m trying to learn and figure out and balance. I’m a marketing director for a theatre I love just because I love it and the people. I’m a writer in craft and profession and ministry. I’m still a full-time mama. I’m a wife to the person I love the most. And I’m also a person. I’m still a person in the midst of all of the other things. And sometimes my body flat out gives up.

I’ve had a non-stop migraine for a week. And to be honest, I haven’t done my best in caring for me. I’ve ate like crap, I’ve chugged caffeine, I’ve popped one migraine combination of meds after another trying to get relief and push through and tie shoes and type up drafts and text back and not forget to turn the crock pot on and I’m flat exhausted.

But I’m doing my best. And this morning I left the house a mess and shut my laptop and went to a physical therapy session and said “help” and got an ice water and tonight I’m going to bed early. Because though most days it doesn’t feel like it, today that’s my best. And that’s good enough for me. And whatever your best looks like today, that’s good enough for you too.

I did an exercise once in counseling where I “we

I did an exercise once in counseling where I “went and got” a younger version of myself that was “stuck” in a certain memory/thought process. I closed my eyes and invited Jesus into a painful memory and imagined myself grabbing my 17 year old hand, and pulling me along to present day. Forgiven and loved.

As I was planning a party for myself this weekend (my words for 2023 are savor and celebrate), this photo popped into my brain and I asked my mom to send it to me. It’s one of my favorites from when I was little because it’s me in the most “me” pose and grin there’s ever been. Over the top. Sassy. Pink. Confident that the person on the other side of the camera thinks she’s awesome. Because she knew (at the time) she was awesome.

I’ve not celebrated much as an adult. Not really. I’ve been too cautious. Too afraid and aware of what could go wrong because so much has gone wrong. And there’s a lot wrong in my world right now.

Maybe it’s because I’m getting older. Maybe it’s because I’m tired of living in the what if’s…but this year, I’m going to celebrate for the little girl in this photo.

I’m going to live, for her. I’m going to dream again, for her. I’m going to laugh hard and eat good food and take care of myself and look out for myself and do new things, for her.

She survived the impossible. She is a miracle girl. She is a talented girl. She is a smart girl. She is a capable girl. She is a flawed girl. And a fearful girl. But she is a brave girl. And I’m going to do it for her.

And as I look ahead into 2023, the picture in front of me, the goal ahead of me, the inspiration of what I want to be? A 3 year old confident, sassy, ambitious, fearfully and wonderfully made ballerina named Bethany. Her.

This year, don’t do all of the things for the “you” that you think you should be or thought you would be. Take care of yourself. Make goals. Protect yourself. Dream again. Do all of the “things”…for her. The girl that deep down, you still are. ✨

The house we built was stupid pretty. Stupid expen

The house we built was stupid pretty. Stupid expensive and stupid pretty. White farmhouse, pristine paint, marble floors, brick laundry, soaking tub with chandelier-all of the things.

And life happened and we decided to sell and move to a (pretty) but modest brick ranch. It has stamped ceilings and a tile kitchen still and dusty blue shutters. It’s a work in progress and for a long time I sort of resented it. It wasn’t what I dreamed of, picked out or built.

Recently, a friend came over and said “gosh I love this place so much better” and I looked at her like she had 4 eyes. She said “this is much more comfortable”. And she’s right. This house allows space for life.

Yesterday I hosted my sister-in-law’s wedding shower and I was slightly apprehensive about it. It is much easier to host when your kitchen could be an ad for Southern Living. But as people walked to the back door, this chalk graffiti greeted them on their way in and I didn’t bother scrubbing it off. The boys love to color right now and they love chalk. And they said this was “decorating our house for baby Jesus’ birthday”. So I left it. And prayerfully, nobody thought I was too tacky because of it. But even if they did-I think it’s a pretty sweet welcome to our home. And I’m not going to bother erasing it until a good rain does it for me.

I think it’s much more important, maybe, instead of a home fit for Southern Living, to have a home full of love and life. And well, toddler chalk art is the stuff of life right now. So if you happen to drop by, consider it the warmest welcome on your way inside 💙

If your friends don’t hype you up like this befo

If your friends don’t hype you up like this before everything (good and holy) that you do, get new ones.

I’m not sure if there’s an exact scripture to back that up. But it is a life lesson I’ve learned recently. I prayed a lot about friendship and into making good, real friends as an adult. I’ve not always been a good friend. And I’ve not always attracted the best ones. But the Lord has been kind and sent me opportunities to create some of the best friendships I’ve ever known in the past few years.

Instead of desiring so strongly to fit in, I am the most “myself” I’ve ever been, and in turn I’ve somehow made friends that not only “fit” with me, but that enrich my life more than I ever could have asked or imagined. They make me feel like the most LOVED human in the room, no matter the room I’m in. They call me out. They challenge me. The cuss with me 🤣 (at times). But they always, always carry me back to the cross. And pick my head up and hold it high when I cannot. The people that party with you in the good times, should also be the ones praying for you at all times. And if they can’t do both, you need new people girlfriend. Girls support girls, but like, really though. 👑
